Safety Star Winner Rick Hillman – Mercer Cty Special Svcs and Vo-Tech Schools Safety Star Winner Dr. Christine Vespe – Superintendent of Shamong Safety Hero Winner Jodi Lennon – Business Administrator from Riverside Each year, the Burlington County Insurance Pool Joint Insurance Fund (BCIP JIF) rewards the extraordinary efforts of member districts for their commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, staff and community by actively participating in risk management programs. In particular, we recognized the challenges faced by school district employees who carried out their responsibilities while adjusting to the new normal that has become the hallmark of 2020. In all, thirty-eight (38) member school districts were recognized and received awards totaling $164,000. Magnolia Public School, Medford Lakes School District, Mount Laurel Township BOE, and Riverside Township BOE were recognized as Safety Districts of the Year for their ongoing contribution to safety efforts, each earning an additional $2,500 reward. Rick Hillman, Manager of Buildings and Grounds from Mercer County Special Services and Mercer County Technical Schools won the Safety Star of the Year Award for his commitment to providing a secure learning environment, and for going above and beyond to ensure both Districts are safe. Christine Vespe, Superintendent from Shamong Township School District also won the Safety Star of the Year Award for spearheading a safety initiative to provide training to staff members in “Stop the Bleed” bleeding control protocols for trauma. Jodi Lennon, Business Administrator from Riverside Township Board of Education won the Safety Hero Award for her ongoing contribution to safety efforts. In particular, we recognized the challenges faced by school district employees who carried out their responsibilities while adjusting to the new normal that has become the hallmark of 2020. In all, 23 member school districts were recognized and received awards totaling $99,500. • Lisa Smith RN, School Nurse from Folsom Board of Education received the Safety Star of the Year Award for serving as an invaluable resource to research and educate staff and students on measures to protect the school from COVID-19. Her dedication allowed the school to reopen safely and successfully. • Judi Bessor, Facilities Director from Mainland Regional High School also received the Safety Star of the Year. She is a committed and valued employee who has gone beyond the daily working hours to ensure the facility is safe and secure, both before and during this pandemic. • Brigantine Public Schools, Folsom Board of Education, and Pitman Board of Education were recognized as Safety Districts of the Year for their ongoing contribution to safety efforts, each earning an additional $2,500 reward. The SPELL JIF is proud to announce that its affiliated JIFs consisting of ACCASBO, BCIP and GCSSD are collectively returning $1,675,000 to their 84 member school districts in central and southern New Jersey this summer. This is in addition to the $25,085,208 already distributed as surplus over more than thirty years. In all, nineteen (19) member school districts were recognized and received awards totaling $74,250. • Michael Corrado, School Resource and Attendance Officer of Hamilton Township School District received the Safety Star of the Year for his ongoing contribution to safety efforts, including placing himself between a door and an out of control adult who was verbally abusing the staff. • Egg Harbor City School District and Egg Harbor Township School District were each recognized as Safety District of the Year for reaching above and beyond the call of duty, earning an additional $2,500 reward.
